Hegyhátszentmárton
Hungary, Hungary
Hegyhátszentmárton is a very small village in Vas County in western Hungary, located within the Őrség National Park near the Lugos Stream and the village of Ivánc.
Known for its peaceful rural setting and natural surroundings, it has only a few dozen residents giving it a quiet and secluded atmosphere. The settlement has medieval origins and was first mentioned in historical records in 1388, though its roots date back to the Árpád era. It was closely associated with the noble Ivánczy family, who owned the area for centuries and built a small castle or fortified manor here during the 16th century.
The castle was eventually destroyed during the Ottoman period, but traces of its earthworks and moat can still be seen. The village’s present-day Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin was built in 1905, preserving fragments from the earlier medieval church that once stood in the area. Today, Hegyhátszentmárton is valued for its historical heritage, scenic countryside, and tranquil location in one of Hungary’s most picturesque rural regions.
