Helmsley Walled Garden
United Kingdom, United Kingdom
Helmsley Walled Garden is a restored 5-acre Victorian kitchen garden in the North York Moors National Park near Helmsley Castle, originally built in 1758 to supply fruit, vegetables, and flowers to Duncombe Park estate.
Abandoned after World War I and left derelict by the 1980s, local nurse Alison Ticehurst began its revival in 1994 as a therapeutic space for community wellbeing, now featuring vibrant herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, medicinal physic garden, apple orchards with over 100 heritage varieties, glasshouses, and intimate themed areas like clematis and iris borders.
Fully accessible with a café, plant sales, and volunteer programs, it offers peaceful paths, seasonal displays from spring blossom to autumn harvests, and a tranquil setting blending history, horticulture, and nature conservation.
