Henneburg - Stadtprozelten
Stadtprozelten, Germany, Germany
Henneburg, originally known as Burg Prozelten, is one of Bavaria’s largest castle ruins, dramatically situated on a hill about 100 meters above the town of Stadtprozelten overlooking the Main River. The castle’s origins date back to the 12th century, and it served as an important fortified stronghold controlling the surrounding region. During the Middle Ages, the castle was owned by several noble families and later became a major seat of the Teutonic Order for nearly two centuries. It was subsequently administered by the Archbishopric of Mainz before gradually losing its strategic importance and falling into ruin. Today, Henneburg is a popular historical attraction that can be explored on foot. Visitors can walk through the extensive ruins, climb its towers for panoramic views of the Main Valley, and experience one of the most impressive medieval castle sites in the Spessart region.
