Höchstadt Castle
Höchstadt, Germany, Germany
Höchstadt Castle is a prominent late Renaissance palace in Höchstadt, Bavaria, built between 1589 and 1603 for Count Palatine Philipp Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg. It was intended as a residence for his wife, Anna of Jülich-Cleves-Berg, who later lived there as a widow, and it remains one of the most important architectural monuments of the former Palatinate-Neuburg principality. The castle combines elegant Renaissance design with elements of an older medieval fortress, including a surviving Gothic tower. Its richly decorated chapel is especially notable for preserving rare Protestant artwork from the period before the Counter-Reformation. Today, the fully restored castle serves as a cultural center with museums, exhibitions, concert spaces, and event venues. Visitors can learn about regional history, including the famous Battle of Höchstädt of 1704, while exploring one of southern Germany’s finest Renaissance castles.
