Hohenstaufen Castle was the ancestral seat of the powerful Hohenstaufen (Staufer) dynasty, one of the most influential noble families of the Holy Roman Empire.

Built around 1070 on the summit of Hohenstaufen Mountain near Göppingen, it became closely associated with rulers such as Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa and Emperor Frederick II. The castle played a major role in medieval German history as the birthplace of a dynasty that produced kings, dukes, and emperors.

After the decline of the Staufer family, the fortress changed hands several times before being destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and never rebuilt. Today, only the ruins and archaeological remains survive on the hilltop, but the site remains one of the most important historic landmarks in Baden-Württemberg.
