Hohenstein Castle is a striking medieval hilltop castle located in the village of Hohenstein, part of Kirchensittenbach in Bavaria’s Hersbruck region. Its origins likely date back to the 11th century, with the first recorded mention in 1163. Perched on a dramatic rocky outcrop, the castle has long been an important landmark and defensive stronghold in the area. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several powerful rulers, including the Hohenstaufen, Wittelsbach, and Luxembourg dynasties. After becoming property of the Imperial City of Nuremberg in 1505, it served as an administrative center before suffering damage during later conflicts and gradually falling into decline. Today, Hohenstein Castle remains one of the most recognizable monuments in the Nürnberger Land region. Partly restored and open to visitors, it offers impressive views over the surrounding Franconian countryside and provides a fascinating glimpse into the area's medieval history.
