Hohenstoffeln is a striking double-peaked volcanic mountain reaching 844 meters in Germany's Hegau region near Hilzingen, Baden-Württemberg, featuring the Ruine Hohenstoffeln—a cluster of three high medieval castle ruins (Vorder-, Mittel-, and Hinterhohenstoffeln) built around the 12th-13th centuries to control key routes. The northern summit hosted Hinterstoffeln, the southern Vorderstoffeln, and the saddle Mittelstoffeln, all reduced to foundations and walls since destruction in the Thirty Years' War, now blending with basalt columns and Deckentuff geology in a protected nature reserve. Hikers reach the panoramic site via unmarked woodland trails from Binningen or Hombollhof, enjoying views of Hegau volcanoes, Lake Constance, and the Alps amid rare flora and geology.
