Höhingen Castle
Germany, Germany
Höhingen Castle is a ruined early medieval fortress crowning Schlossberg hill at 354 meters above Achkarren, part of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl in Germany's Baden-Württemberg Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, towering 150 meters over the Rhine Valley below. First mentioned in 1259 after centuries of expansions, it served as a key stronghold until peasants from Achkarren torched it in 1525 during the German Peasants' War over forest rights disputes with local margraves. Rebuilt in 1620 as a defensive fort amid Thirty Years' War conflicts, praised for its steep rock position, deep trenches, sheer cliffs, and cistern, its stones were later sold to France in 1671 for Neu-Breisach fortifications, leaving hikeable remnants of walls and a gatehouse today.
