Inowłódz
Poland, Poland
Inowłódz is one of Poland's oldest settlements in central Poland's Łódź Voivodeship along the Pilica River, first mentioned in 1145 as a key trade crossing between Lesser Poland and Łęczyca Land, with town rights granted mid-14th century by Casimir the Great. The king fortified it with defensive walls in 1370 and built a Gothic castle nearby around 1356-1366 to guard the northern Małopolska border and customs post, while prosperity from brewing and grain trade peaked in the 14th-15th centuries before Swedish Deluge destruction in the 1650s. Losing town status after the 1863 January Uprising under Russian repression, it briefly became a 19th-century spa with mineral springs before World Wars devastated it, preserving today the Romanesque St. Giles Church (likely founded 1082-1130s by Władysław Herman), ruined castle remnants, and St. Michael's parish church amid its historic rural setting.
