Irmelshausen
Germany, Germany
Irmelshausen is a small village in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and part of the municipality of Höchheim. It is best known for its impressive moated castle, which stands on an artificial island and is considered one of the finest and best-preserved water castles in Franconia. The village has a long history dating back to at least the early Middle Ages. Its castle was associated with the Lords of Irmelshausen and later became the property of the influential von Bibra family in 1376. The present castle structure was largely built and expanded during the 15th and 16th centuries and remains linked to the von Bibra and Stauffenberg families today. Surrounded by the peaceful countryside of the Grabfeld region, Irmelshausen is valued for its historic character, picturesque castle, and late Gothic church. Together, these landmarks make the village a notable destination for visitors interested in Franconian history and architecture.
