The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida, began as the Municipal Zoo in 1914 with a single red-tailed deer and initially located in the Springfield neighborhood.
Due to flooding and neighborhood concerns, it moved to its current 122-acre site on the Trout River in 1925. Over the decades, it expanded significantly, adding diverse species and botanical gardens, becoming a major wildlife attraction.
The zoo underwent a major redevelopment starting in 1992 funded by public and private sources, adding new exhibits such as the Range of the Jaguar, the Savanna Blooms botanical garden, and a Children's Play Park.
