Jaswant Thada
Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India
Jaswant Thada is a serene, white-marble cenotaph in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, often called the “Taj Mahal of Marwar,” built between 1899 and 1906 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and now serving as the royal cremation ground for the Rathore rulers of Jodhpur.
Situated just about 1 km northeast of the imposing Mehrangarh Fort and overlooking a small lake, the main structure is a temple-like pavilion made of intricately carved, paper-thin sheets of Makrana marble that glow warmly when struck by sunlight, blending Rajput and Mughal architectural styles with central and corner domes, delicate jalis (latticed screens), sculptures, frescoes, and lotus motifs.
The complex includes three additional smaller cenotaphs of other rulers, a memorial of a peacock that flew into a funeral pyre, carved gazebos, a multi-tiered garden, and a room displaying portraits of Jodhpur’s historic Maharajas and rulers, creating a peaceful retreat from the city with excellent views of Mehrangarh Fort and the surrounding Blue City.
