Verified Jelcz-Laskowice

Poland, Poland

Jelcz-Laskowice is a town in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, within Oława County, formed in 1987 by merging the villages of Jelcz and Laskowice, which date back to 1203 and 1245 respectively, and located near the Oder River on the edge of the Oleśnicka Plain.

Jelcz gained prominence with a stone-brick castle built around 1268 on an island in the Oder, serving as a key defensive outpost for Wrocław, notably the site of Duke Henryk IV Probus's 1277 abduction by his uncle Bolesław II the Bald.

Owned by nobles like the Sauermans from 1508—who adopted the name von Saurma-Jeltsch—it later hosted WWII forced labor camps and post-1945 became home to Jelczańskie Zakłady Samochodowe truck factories, driving population growth to about 15,500 today.
