Kalangala Islands

The Kalangala Islands, also known as the Ssese Islands, are an archipelago of 84 islands scattered across Lake Victoria in the northwestern part of the lake within Uganda's Kalangala District.

The islands cover a total area of approximately 432 square kilometers, which is a small portion of the district's overall 9,067 square kilometers predominantly covered by water. Many of the islands are forested, including around 34 central forest reserves, and they feature wetlands and sandy loamy soils. The largest island is Bugala, which is about 296 square kilometers, making up more than 60% of the land area.

The islands support diverse ecosystems and are inhabited by local communities who depend largely on fishing, agriculture, and increasingly, tourism. The climate around the islands is influenced by prevailing winds across Lake Victoria, contributing to a unique environment rich in flora and fauna, with high evaporation rates and seasonal rainfall patterns. The Kalangala Islands serve as both an ecological treasure and a vital cultural and economic hub in Lake Victoria.​
