Kaltenburg Castle
Germany, Germany
Kaltenburg Castle is a medieval castle ruin located in the Lone Valley in Baden-Württemberg, between Giengen an der Brenz and Niederstotzingen.
Built during the 12th century under the Hohenstaufen dynasty, it occupied a strategic position on a rocky hill above the confluence of the Lone and Hürbe rivers. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of several noble families and was damaged during conflicts, including a siege in 1435 and further destruction during the Thirty Years’ War.
Although parts of the complex were rebuilt, the castle gradually declined and became a ruin. Today, Kaltenburg is a well-known historical landmark with substantial surviving walls and towers. Set amid forests and scenic valleys near the Charlottenhöhle cave, the ruins are a popular destination for hikers, history enthusiasts, and visitors interested in medieval architecture and local heritage.
