Kappad Beach
Kappad, Kerala, India
Kappad Beach, also known locally as Kappakadavu, is a small, historically significant shoreline on the Malabar Coast in Kozhikode district, Kerala, located about 16 kilometers south of Kozhikode city.
It is famous as the place where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first landed on the Indian coast in 1498, an event often seen as the start of Europe’s sea‑based trade with India. The beach has golden sand, calm waters, and a rocky headland stretching into the sea, framed by coconut groves and an 800‑year‑old temple on the rocks, giving it both scenic and cultural charm.
Kappad is also an important nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles and is one of Kerala’s few Blue Flag‑certified beaches, recognized for cleanliness, safety, and environmental care.
