Kappad
Kerala, India
Kappad is a small coastal village and beach in Kozhikode district, Kerala, located a short distance south of Kozhikode city along the Malabar Coast.
It is most famous as the spot where the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first set foot on the Malabar coast in 1498, marking the opening of a direct sea route between Europe and India. The beach itself, locally called Kappakkadavu, has golden sand, rocky outcrops, and relatively calm waters, and has been awarded the Blue Flag certification for cleanliness, safety, and environmental care.
In addition to its historical importance, Kappad is also recognized as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles and is popular with visitors looking for a quiet, scenic beach experience with a touch of history.
