Karlsburg Castle is a historic castle ruin located on a hill overlooking the Main River near Karlstadt am Main in Bavaria. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, and it was an important political, religious, and administrative center associated with the early development of the Bishopric of Würzburg and the settlement of Karlburg. The castle occupied a strategically important position controlling river crossings and trade routes through Franconia. Over the centuries it was expanded and fortified, but it was ultimately destroyed during the German Peasants’ War in 1525 and was never rebuilt, leaving the impressive ruins visible today. Today, Karlsburg is a popular historical and hiking destination.
