Kellereischloss, often called the “Red Castle” (Rotes Schloss), is a striking Baroque palace located in the wine town of Hammelburg, Bavaria. It was built between 1726 and 1731 as the summer residence of Prince-Abbot Adolph von Dalberg on the site of an older administrative and wine-storage complex that dated back to at least 1279. Designed by court architect Andrea Gallasini, the palace reflects the importance of wine production in Hammelburg. Its enormous underground cellars could store more than 700,000 liters of wine in over 100 barrels during the peak of the region’s wine industry. Today, Kellereischloss is one of Hammelburg’s most recognizable landmarks. It houses public facilities such as the tourist information center, city library, and the Rhön Nature Experience Center, while also serving as a reminder of the town’s long history of winemaking and Baroque architecture.
