Verified Kenwood House

London, United Kingdom

Kenwood House, located on the edge of London’s Hampstead Heath, was originally built in the early 17th century, probably by John Bill, the King's printer, who purchased the land in 1616.

The house was significantly remodeled between 1764 and 1779 by the famous Scottish architect Robert Adam for William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, transforming it into a neoclassical villa. Adam's work on the house includes the addition of a grand northern entrance with a pedimented portico, elegant interiors such as the entrance hall, Great Stairs, and notably the Great Room or library, which is considered one of Adam’s finest surviving interiors, inspired by ancient Roman designs.

Kenwood House exemplifies Georgian architectural elegance with a harmonious mix of classical and neoclassical styles, and the estate includes 74 acres of gardens and woodland offering impressive views toward the City of London. Kenwood also houses a renowned collection of Old Master and British paintings, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark in London.
