Kit-Mikayi
Kisumu County, Kenya
Kit-Mikayi (also spelled Kit Mikayi) is a dramatic 120-meter-high rock formation located about 29 kilometers west of Kisumu town in Kisumu County, western Kenya, roughly 1 kilometer from the Kisumu-Bondo road. Its name comes from Dholuo, the Luo language, meaning “the stone of the first wife,” stemming from a local legend about an old man named Ngeso who fell in love with the rock and spent his days inside its caves, leading his wife to tell visitors, “He has gone to his first wife (Mikayi)”. The site is deeply sacred to the Luo community, traditionally used for worship, meditation, and sacrifices during hardships, and has become a popular pilgrimage destination for followers of the Legio Maria sect who come to pray and fast for weeks at a time. Recognized for its cultural significance, Kit-Mikayi was inscribed under the UNESCО 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 11, 2019, as a site needing urgent protection, and it now serves as a regional tourist attraction where visitors can explore its caves, climb the massive stones, and learn about Luo heritage.
