Kloster Banz

Bad Staffelstein, Germany, Germany

---

Kloster Banz is a former Benedictine monastery located on a hill overlooking the Main Valley near Bad Staffelstein in Bavaria, Germany.

Founded around 1070, it was the oldest monastery in the Upper Main region and became an important religious, cultural, and scholarly center for centuries. After suffering damage from wars and conflicts, the complex was rebuilt in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in a magnificent Baroque style. Its church, designed by the Dientzenhofer brothers, is especially renowned for its impressive architecture, ornate interiors, frescoes, and artistic decoration.

The monastery was dissolved during the secularization of 1803 and later became known as Schloss Banz. Today, it serves as a conference and educational center while remaining one of Franconia’s most important historic landmarks. Its scenic location, rich history, and striking Baroque architecture attract visitors from across Germany and beyond.
