Klosterburg Kastl

Klosterburg Kastl is a striking hilltop complex in Kastl, Bavaria, that began as a medieval castle before being transformed into a Benedictine monastery around 1100.

Founded by regional nobles and confirmed by Pope Paschal II in 1102, it grew into one of the most powerful and wealthy monasteries in the region and became an important center of monastic reform during the late Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the site served many roles, including a Benedictine abbey, a Jesuit residence, a property of the Order of Malta, a court and administrative center, and later a boarding school.

Following extensive restoration work, the complex has continued to serve public functions and today hosts a campus of Bavaria’s university for public administration and police studies. Much of the historic complex remains preserved, including parts of its medieval fortifications, gate tower, monastery buildings, and church.
