Kollenburg, also known as Collenburg, is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the Main River near the town of Collenberg in Bavaria. First documented in 1214 and likely built in the 12th or early 13th century, it was associated with noble families such as the Schenken von Limpurg and later the Rüdt von Collenberg. Over the centuries, the castle changed ownership several times and was expanded into a fortified residence. After its noble residents moved away in the 18th century, the castle gradually fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned. During the 19th century, parts of the ruin were even used as a source of building stone. Today, Kollenburg is a picturesque ruin surrounded by forest on a sandstone ridge above the Main Valley. Visitors can explore its remains and enjoy scenic views while discovering an important piece of the region’s medieval history.
