Koło Castle
Poland, Poland
Koło Castle in central Poland's Greater Poland region is a well-preserved Gothic ruin built by King Casimir the Great in the mid-14th century, likely after 1362 when the town gained rights, on the site of an earlier tower-keep possibly from Władysław the Elbow-high or Wenceslaus II.
Forming a rectangular enclosure about 30x50 meters with brick walls on stone foundations, it featured a dominant southern bergfried tower—square-based below transitioning to cylindrical above at 8 meters diameter and roughly 20 meters tall—surrounded by a moat in the Warta River lowlands to guard trade routes from Greater Poland to Łęczyca against Teutonic threats.
High-status residential spaces with Gothic arcades, stoves, and multi-light windows filled the bergfried, while the complex endured sieges and floods before partial decay, leaving today the striking tower, wall fragments, and pistons for visitors exploring its Casimir-era defensive role.
