Kowalewo Pomorskie
Poland, Poland
Kowalewo Pomorskie is a small town in north-central Poland's Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in Golub-Dobrzyń County, located about 30 km northeast of Toruń along key medieval trade routes.
Part of early Piast Poland from the 10th century, it emerged around a Teutonic Knights' castle built after 1231 on a Slavic stronghold site, gaining Chełmno-law town rights in 1275—refounded in 1298 after Tatar destruction—with a rectangular layout, marketplace, defensive walls, and commandry seat under figures like Rudolf Kowal.
Incorporated into Poland after the 1466 Second Peace of Toruń as a starosty center, it suffered repeated devastation from Swedish Deluge occupations (1629, 1655-1657), Prussian partition in 1772 leading to Germanization, and later wars, shrinking its population dramatically before modern recovery.
