Kruszwica is a historic town in central Poland's Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship on Lake Gopło's shores, one of Poland's oldest settlements dating to the 6th century with a major Piast dynasty stronghold from the late 10th century serving as a key defensive, economic, and political center. Destroyed in 11th-century dynastic wars and rebuilt by Casimir the Great in 1350-1355 as a Gothic brick castle—strategically guarding trade routes against the Teutonic Knights—it suffered repeated devastation from fires, Swedish Deluge occupation in 1657, and Prussian demolitions, leaving picturesque ruins today. Iconic landmarks include the 14th-century Mysia Wieża (Mouse Tower) on a lake island tied to the Popiel legend, the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 12th century, remnants of the castle with a deep well, and a vibrant market square amid thriving medieval crafts like glassmaking.
