Kuelap Fortress

Longuita, Peru, Peru

Kuelap Fortress is a large pre‑Columbian stone fortress in northern Peru, near the town of Longuita in the Amazonas region, built by the Chachapoyas culture, often called the “Warriors of the Clouds.” It sits on a limestone ridge about 3,000 meters above sea level, overlooking the Utcubamba River valley, and is one of the largest stone ruins in the Americas, covering around six hectares and stretching roughly 600 meters in length. The fortress is surrounded by massive stone walls up to 20 meters high with three main entrances, and inside are hundreds of circular stone houses, temples, and tombs that once housed several thousand people. Built mainly between about 500 and 1000 CE, Kuelap served as a political and religious center and later a stronghold against the Inca and then the Spanish, and it was abandoned in the 16th century before being rediscovered in the 19th century. Today it is a major archaeological attraction known as the “Machu Picchu of the North,” with a cable car and walking routes bringing visitors to explore its weathered walls and panoramic mountain views.
