Kürnburg Castle

Stamsried, Germany, Germany

---

Kürnburg Castle, also known as Burgruine Kürnberg, is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle located near Stamsried in Bavaria.

It was built in 1354 by Dietrich Kürner after he received the nearby estate of Stamsried as a fief, and it served as the seat of a local noble family for many generations. The castle changed ownership several times during the late Middle Ages and eventually became associated with the Stamsried estate.

During the Thirty Years’ War, Swedish troops besieged and destroyed the fortress in 1634, after which it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Today, Kürnburg is one of the most impressive castle ruins in the Upper Palatinate. Visitors can explore substantial remains of the main castle, outer defenses, gate structures, and courtyards. Extensive restoration work in the late 20th century preserved the site, and an observation platform now offers scenic views of the surrounding Bavarian landscape.
