La Pietà di Michelangelo
Inside St. Peter’s Basilica, Holy See
La Pietà di Michelangelo, housed inside St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created by Michelangelo between 1498 and 1499 when he was just in his early twenties.
Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, it depicts the Virgin Mary tenderly cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion, capturing a moment of profound sorrow and compassion. The sculpture is renowned for its extraordinary beauty, delicate detail, and emotional expression, showcasing Michelangelo's skill in blending naturalism with classical ideals of beauty.
The Virgin Mary is portrayed younger than Jesus, inspired by Renaissance interpretations of purity and virtue. Originally commissioned by French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères for his funeral monument in Old St. Peter's Basilica, the statue was later moved to its current location in the new basilica in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed, carving his name across Mary's sash.
The Pietà suffered damage in 1972 during an attack but was meticulously restored and is now protected behind bulletproof glass. It remains one of the most famous and revered sculptures in the world, drawing millions of visitors and pilgrims who admire its artistic perfection and spiritual depth.
