Verified Lacock Abbey

Lacock, England, United Kingdom

Lacock Abbey is a Grade I listed country house in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire, built on the site of a 13th‑century Augustinian nunnery founded by Ela, Countess of Salisbury.

The abbey remained a convent until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, when it was converted into a family home for the Sharington and later Talbot families, keeping its medieval cloister court at the heart of the building.

It is best known as the home of William Henry Fox Talbot, who carried out pioneering experiments in photography there in the 1830s and created the first photographic negative, making Lacock a key site in the history of the medium.

Now owned and opened to the public by the National Trust, the abbey preserves a mix of medieval monastic spaces, Tudor and Georgian interiors, and tranquil gardens, while the nearby Fox Talbot Museum in the village celebrates its photographic heritage and its role as a popular filming location for movies such as the Harry Potter series.
