Lalbagh Botanical Garden is a historic 240-acre botanical oasis in the heart of Bengaluru (Mavalli, South Bangalore), Karnataka, and one of India’s oldest and most renowned botanical gardens.

Originally established in 1760 as a 40-acre private Mughal-style garden for Mysore ruler Hyder Ali and further developed by his son Tipu Sultan—who brought rare plants from Persia, Afghanistan, and France—it gained status as a Government Botanical Garden in 1856 and is now under the Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka.

The garden houses India’s largest collection of tropical and sub-tropical plants, including over 1,854 species across 673 genera, many trees several centuries old, and rare specimens from around the world. Its most iconic landmark is the Glass House, built in 1889 modeled after London’s Crystal Palace to acclimatize exotic plants, which today hosts Lalbagh’s famous biannual flower shows.
