Landshut Residence

Landshut, Germany, Germany

---

The Landshut Residence (Stadtresidenz Landshut) is a magnificent Renaissance palace located in the heart of Landshut’s old town.

It was built between 1536 and 1543 for Duke Ludwig X of Bavaria and is widely regarded as the first Renaissance palace north of the Alps inspired by Italian architectural models. The complex combines a “German Building” facing the main street with an “Italian Building” arranged around an elegant arcaded courtyard.

Inspired by the Palazzo Te in Mantua, the palace introduced Italian Renaissance design to Bavaria and features richly decorated rooms with frescoes, stucco work, and ornate interiors. Today, the residence is one of Landshut’s most important cultural landmarks and functions as a museum. Visitors can explore its historic halls, including the famous Birkenfeld Rooms and Renaissance state rooms, which showcase the artistic and architectural heritage of the Wittelsbach rulers.
