Liwonde National Park, located in the Machinga District of Malawi’s Southern Region, is one of the country’s premier wildlife destinations.

Established in 1973, the park covers about 548 square kilometers of woodlands, floodplains, and savannah centered around the scenic Shire River, which attracts large numbers of animals throughout the year. The park is famous for its rich wildlife, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and hundreds of bird species.
