Luanda Bay
Luanda, Luanda Province, Angola
Luanda Bay is a large body of water located in front of Luanda, the capital city of Angola. Protected partly by Luanda Island, the bay played an important role in the city’s founding in the late 16th century and has been central to its development.
The area around the bay includes many historic buildings such as the Banco de Angola and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré. Over time, changes were made along the bay’s natural channels to create roads and separate parts of the bay, one of which is now called Samba Bay. Luanda Bay lies along Angola’s narrow coastal plain, a region characterized by low terraces and an arid climate influenced by the cold Benguela Current.
The bay remains an important feature of Luanda, combining historical significance, natural beauty, and its role as a focal point of the city’s coastal geography.
