Lutzmannstein

Velburg, Germany, Germany

---

Lutzmannstein is a historic former castle settlement near Velburg in Bavaria, Germany.

The site originated as a medieval castle, likely founded in the 12th century by the Lords of Lutzmannstein, and it became the center of a small lordship that played an important role in the Upper Palatinate region for several centuries. After the extinction of the Lutzmannstein family in the 13th century, the estate passed to Bavarian rulers and later to several noble families.

The settlement below the castle received market rights in 1472 and developed into a local administrative and economic center. The original castle was damaged during the Thirty Years’ War and later replaced by a newer palace complex. Today, only ruins and remnants of the former fortifications survive. The area lies within the Hohenfels military training grounds, making it a place of historical interest with limited accessibility.
