Mannheim Baroque Palace
Mannheim, Germany, Germany
Mannheim Baroque Palace (Barockschloss Mannheim) is Germany’s largest Baroque palace and one of the largest palaces in Europe, with a massive 440-meter-long façade, a vast main courtyard, and a total floor area of six hectares.
Built between 1720 and 1760 over 40 years, it was intended to be the second-largest Baroque palace complex in Europe after Versailles, designed to showcase the political power of the Palatine Prince Electors in the Holy Roman Empire. The palace was constructed after Prince Elector Carl Philipp moved the palatinate’s seat of power from Heidelberg to Mannheim in 1720, and it later became a famous European court of muses under Carl Theodor, who was a generous patron of arts and sciences and attracted luminaries including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The yellow and red sandstone structure was almost completely destroyed during World War II but has since been rebuilt, including the majestic ceremonial staircase and stately Rittersaal (knights’ hall), with restored grand rooms on the main floor now furnished with over 800 exhibits including 21 large tapestries, ornate furniture, priceless paintings, valuable porcelain, and costly silverware.
Today the palace houses the University of Mannheim and features the Schloss Museum with its impressive rococo Kabinettsbibliothek and the Baroque Schlosskirche, both open to visitors.
