Markuh Castle
Ketalem and Sadat Shahr, Iran, Iran
Markuh Castle is a historic fortress located on a hill near Ketalem and Sadat Shahr in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran.
The castle is believed to date back to the early Islamic period, although some studies suggest it may have older origins and was later rebuilt and used as a military stronghold. Built in a strategic location, the fortress overlooks the surrounding forests, mountains, and the Caspian Sea, allowing defenders to monitor the region from all directions.
Today, only parts of its walls and towers remain, but the structure still demonstrates the defensive architecture of its time. The castle is a registered national heritage site of Iran and is popular with visitors for both its historical significance and panoramic views. Its hilltop setting makes it one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Ramsar area.
