Verified Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

California, United States

The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg, California, cover 47 acres of diverse coastal land including canyons, wetlands, coastal bluffs, and pine forests.

Founded in 1961 by retired nurseryman Ernest Schoefer and his wife Betty, the gardens took advantage of the area's mild climate and ample water, ideal for growing acid-loving plants like rhododendrons. Over the years, the gardens evolved from a private enterprise into a public botanical garden with extensive plant collections, including rare conifers, magnolias, native species, and proteas.

The property was acquired with support from the California Coastal Conservancy and is now managed by a nonprofit organization committed to conserving plants in harmony with the Northern California coastal ecosystem.

Visitors enjoy scenic trails, coastal views, and educational programs while the gardens also contribute produce to the local food bank and demonstrate best practices in sustainable food gardening. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens serve as a vital center for botanical conservation, public engagement, and appreciation of the unique coastal environment.
