Mildenburg is a striking medieval castle that overlooks the town of Miltenberg in Bavaria from a hill above the Main River. Built in the 12th century, it originally served as a strategic fortress and later became an important possession of the Archbishops of Mainz, helping to protect trade routes and regional authority along the Main. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded, damaged during various conflicts, and repeatedly restored. Despite these changes, much of the historic structure has survived, making it one of the best-preserved castles in the region. Today, Mildenburg is one of Miltenberg’s most famous landmarks and houses a museum featuring art, icons, and exhibits on the castle’s history. Visitors are also rewarded with panoramic views of the charming old town and the Main Valley.
