Verified Minterne House

Dorchester, United Kingdom, United Kingdom

Minterne House is a stunning Grade II-listed country house and garden located in Minterne Magna near Dorchester in Dorset, United Kingdom, that has been home to the Churchill and Digby families since 1620.

The present house was built in 1905 by architect Leonard Stokes after the original manor house was demolished due to severe dry rot, creating an authentic reconstruction of the seventeenth-century original in the Dorset countryside along the banks of the River Cerne.

The house retains original Churchill tapestries and furniture and is steeped in naval history, particularly from Admiral Robert Digby who was Captain of the 'Africa' during the Battle of Trafalgar, with many letters, paintings, and prizes from that era still at Minterne.

While the house itself is the private residence of Lord Digby and not open to the public, visitors can explore the world-renowned 27-acre woodland garden, which features a unique Himalayan collection of historic rhododendrons, azaleas, and magnolias, was landscaped in the style of Capability Brown, and has been voted one of the 10 prettiest gardens in England by The Times.
