Monopoli
Italy, Italy
Monopoli is a lively coastal city in Puglia, southern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea in the Metropolitan City of Bari, about halfway between Bari and Brindisi.
It grew from an ancient Greek settlement called “mono polis” (meaning “single city”) and later became an important fortified port under Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Venetians, and Spaniards, whose traces you still see in its architecture and layout.
The historic center is a compact, white‑washed old town with narrow streets, a 16th‑century castle, and an 18th‑century cathedral dedicated to the Madonna della Madia, which sits above the small working harbor where fishing boats still dock every morning. Today Monopoli feels like a smaller, less hectic alternative to nearby Bari or Ostuni, with a vibrant fishing tradition, freshly landed seafood in its restaurants, and a relaxed promenade along the sea walls.
The coastline near the town offers a mix of pebble coves and small sandy beaches where you can swim right below the old ramparts, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with olive groves, orchards, and traditional masserie farms typical of central Puglia. Thanks to its train station and coastal location, Monopoli also works well as a base for exploring the Valle d’Itria and the wider Salento region.
