The island was originally inhabited by the Wabanaki people, who called it Pemetic, meaning "range of mountains," living off the land for thousands of years. European exploration began in the early 1600s with French and English interests vying for control. In 1688, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac received a royal land grant that included the entire island but abandoned his ambitions after a brief stay.

The British gained control in 1759 and encouraged settlement by offering free land, leading to permanent European settlements by the mid-18th century. Agriculture, fishing, shipbuilding, and granite quarrying became primary industries over time. By the early 20th century, efforts to conserve the island’s natural beauty gained momentum, culminating in the establishment of Acadia National Park in 1916, protecting large areas of Mount Desert Island.

Today, Mount Desert Land is characterized by its dramatic granite peaks, forests, and coastal landscapes, remaining a treasured natural and historical area in Maine.
