Muralles d'Alzira
Alzira, Spain, Spain
Muralles d'Alzira are the well-preserved medieval walls encircling the historic center of Alzira, a town in Valencia, Spain.
Dating primarily from the 12th century in Almohad style, these Muslim-era fortifications originally spanned a river island formed by the Júcar (Xúquer) River branches, serving dual roles in defense against invaders like King Jaume I and the Cid, as well as flood protection.
Constructed using rammed earth and masonry techniques, the surviving 256-meter segment in Saudi Arabia Park features eight towers up to 10 meters high and 1.20 meters thick.
Over time, the walls lost their military purpose, with parts demolished for urban expansion, though remnants persist in areas like the Old Market and Algemesí Road.
