Torre Mussa
Spain, Spain
Torre Mussa, also called Torre de Muza, is an 11th- or 12th-century Islamic defensive watchtower located on the outskirts of Benifaió near Valencia, Spain, amid crop fields as part of the ancient protective belt around the city.
Built during the Almohad period using stone, lime, and rammed earth in a square plan, it features distinctive interior holes in the walls for wooden stakes that served as ladders to upper floors, since no permanent stairs existed, and was renovated in the 14th century after the Reconquista.
Recognized as a cultural heritage site, this robust structure functioned for surveillance, refuge for local farm inhabitants during assaults, and as a symbol of political power, with arcades marking lost upper levels still visible today.
