Mwaro Province
Mwaro Province, Burundi
Mwaro Province is a small, mainly rural administrative region in central‑western Burundi, created in 1999 or 2002 by splitting the former Muramvya Province, with its capital also named Mwaro. It covers an area of roughly 840 square kilometers and is bordered by Muramvya, Gitega, Bujumbura Rural, and Bururi provinces, sitting in both the central Mugamba and Kirimiro natural regions. The province has a hilly, agricultural landscape where most people work in farming, growing crops such as coffee, tea, bananas, beans, maize, and root vegetables, which support the local economy and national agro‑export sector. Mwaro is divided into six communes—Bisoro, Gisozi, Kayokwe, Ndava, Nyabihanga, and Rusaka—each with its own local administration, and it is known for relatively high school‑enrollment rates and institutions such as the University of Mwaro near Kibumbu. As of recent years the province has been administratively merged into the larger Gitega Province but remains a recognizable cultural and agricultural zone in the heart of Burundi.
