Nagy-Csakany
Hungary, Hungary
Nagycsákány is a historic settlement in Vas County in western Hungary, near the Austrian border and the town of Körmend.
Today it forms the western part of the municipality of Csákánydoroszló, which was created by merging the former villages of Nagycsákány and Rábadoroszló in 1939. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, and archaeological discoveries, including prehistoric burial mounds, show a long history of settlement.
The village was first mentioned in written records in 1248, and its name is believed to derive from a person of Turkic origin called Csakan. Located in the scenic Rába River valley near the northern gateway of Őrség National Park, Nagycsákány is surrounded by countryside, forests, and traditional rural landscapes. Its historic church and connection to the wider cultural heritage of the region make it a noteworthy part of western Hungary’s history.
