Nahargarh Fort
Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Nahargarh Fort is a historic hilltop fortress perched on the Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur, Rajasthan, built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a royal retreat and to strengthen the defense ring together with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort.
Its name means “abode of tigers,” traditionally linked to the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia whose temple was built within the fort to pacify him and allow construction to proceed. The fort later was expanded in 1868, protected Europeans during the 1857 Indian Mutiny, and served as a hunting residence for the Maharajas.
Inside, the complex includes Madhavendra Bhawan, a two‑storey palace built by Sawai Madho Singh with 12 matching suites for the queens and a larger royal suite for the king, all connected by corridors decorated with delicate frescoes and murals. Visitors today enjoy sweeping panoramic views of Jaipur’s Pink City, especially at sunset and when the fort is beautifully floodlit at night, making it one of Rajasthan’s top photo spots and picnic destinations.
The site also houses the lesser‑known step well for water storage, a Jaipur Wax Museum, and a Glass Palace, and it was featured in the Bollywood film Rang De Basanti. Nahargarh Fort is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with an entry fee of ₹52 for Indian nationals and ₹600 for foreign tourists, and it sits within the Nahargarh Biological Park, a forested area home to many wild animals.
