Verified National Trust - Bateman's

Burwash, England, United Kingdom

Bateman's is a 17th-century Jacobean sandstone house located in Burwash, East Sussex, England, built in 1634, possibly by a local ironmaster, John Britten. It became the home of the famous writer Rudyard Kipling from 1902 until his death in 1936.

The house is noted for its well-preserved historic interiors, oak beams, mullioned windows, and a large central chimney stack, providing a peaceful retreat that inspired much of Kipling’s work, including his Nobel Prize-winning literature.

The gardens were created by Kipling himself using the prize money he received and reflect a traditional English garden style. Bateman's is a Grade I listed building and was bequeathed to the National Trust by Kipling’s widow in 1939.

The estate includes 300 acres of surrounding countryside, with walking paths through a landscape that remains much as it was during Kipling’s time, making it a place of both literary heritage and natural beauty.
