Verified National Trust - Emmetts Garden

Ide Hill, United Kingdom

Emmetts Garden in Ide Hill, Kent, United Kingdom, is an Edwardian garden established in the late 19th century by banker and passionate plantsman Frederic Lubbock, who aimed to create both a family home and a showcase for his collection of rare and exotic plants from around the world.

Influenced by the naturalistic gardening style of William Robinson, the garden features diverse planting areas including a rock garden, wildflower meadow, formal rose garden, and varied woodland filled with bluebells in spring. The garden also contains unique trees and shrubs, like the Chinese pocket-handkerchief tree and a 100-foot Wellingtonia, Kent’s tallest tree.

After a major storm in 1987 devastated much of the planting, the National Trust has maintained and restored the garden, preserving its historic character and seasonal appeal. Emmetts offers visitors peaceful walks, beautiful views, and a blend of formal and informal garden designs that reflect Edwardian horticultural passion and family heritage.
